ARCHAEOLOGY

As the Government embarks on a major programme of road developments as part of it’s National Development Plan 2000-2006 the National Roads Authority is set to become one of the largest developers in the state. The extent of this development programme will result in significant archaeological implications.
The National Roads Authority is committing itself to a responsible approach to the protection of the Archaeological Heritage and in doing so has agreed a code of practice with the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands.
The majority of the Mayo road projects are currently at design stage and every effort is being made to avoid known Archaeological Sites and Monuments. A team of up to fifteen Co. Council archaeologists were employed on the recently opened Knock By-Pass (N17).
