The National Roads Authority is committing itself to a responsible approach to the protection of the Archaeological Heritage and in doing so has agreed a code of practice with the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands. The Mayo road projects that are currently at design stage where every effort is made to avoid known Archaeological Sites and Monuments. A team of up to fifteen Co. Council archaeologists were employed on the N17 Knock By-Pass (N17) with some twenty more on the N5 Charlestown Bypass. Richard Gillespie and Agnes Kerrigan have just published their findings on the Charlestown scheme. Book launch: Dr. Kieran O'Connor, NUI Galway launched the publication by the National Roads Authority of the story of the archaeology of the N5 Charlestown Bypass named "Of Troughs and Tuyeres". The launch of the publication by Richard Gillespie and Agnes Kerrigan took place in the Museum galleries of the National Museum of Ireland - Turlough Park, Castlebar, County Mayo on Thursday November 25th.
